  • 110 g rice short-grain
  • 100 g lentils
  • 650 g water 2.5 cups
  • 1 tsp salt
  • 1 onion Small, finely chopped
  • 30 g olive oil


  • 1 onion Small, finely sliced
  • 20 g flour
  • oil for frying

  • Wash, and soak the rice for 15 minutes.
  • Place the lentils and half of the water in a pot and cook it on high heat ( uncovered) till lentils are cooked and tender. Around 15 minutes.
  • Once the water boils add the rest of the water on 3 additions.
  • Save the lentils water as this will be used to cook the rice, for one recipe you will need 250 ml. In case what you ended with was less substitute with water.
  • In the pot place the rice over the lentils, one cup of the lentil's water and salt.
  • Saute the finely chopped onion in olive oil till transparent for 5 minutes.
  • Coat the sliced onions with flour and deep fry till golden, keep that for garnish.
  • Cook the lentils and rice on high heat till the water comes to a boil.
  • Add in the sauteed onions and olive oil, mix gently, cover the pot, reduce the heat to medium and cook for 5 minutes.
  • Reduce the heat further to low and cook for another 10 minutes or till the rice is fully cooked.
  • Top with the golden fried onions and serve with condiments.
